I LOVE breakfast and know how important it can be, but have struggled with it getting boring. I hate being in a rut, so we have been trying to mix things up. One addition that I've been adding into the fray has been oatmeal. I cannot get over how much tastier "old fashioned" oatmeal is than instant. And it really doesn't take that much longer to cook (6 minutes vs. 1).
So what I'm begging you all for is IDEAS!!! What are your favorite toppings/mix-ins to add to your oatmeal? Does anyone have another favorite hot cereal that they like? I know it's hotter than hot outside and the idea of oatmeal might not be to appealing right now, but I have 3 growing boys and a hubby to feed. Oatmeal sure is a more economical and nutritious way to start our day than cold cereals...
To get the creative juices flowing, here's an amazing collection of oatmeal ideas...
Here is a great post on pre-preparing Steel-Cut Oats. I want to try both the steel-cut variety and pre-preparing. I'm all about trying to make my life simpler in the long run...
It's super simple, but I like to add canned peaches and a little of the juice!

You can add just about anything including some chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
ReplyDeleteI had trouble w/ the link but found the post here.
ReplyDeleteWe like old fashioned oats too! We usually throw in unsweetened dried cranberries, walnuts and a little brown sugar. If we have fresh strawberries chopped up, we might swap out the cranberries for those. (But I try to avoid chopping in the morning...)
You might also find inspiration in Rowdy Pea's granola bar. Didn't I find that blog through you?
Thanks for the suggestions and the heads up on the broken link. I hate it when I do that.
ReplyDeleteOh and we can totally relate to not wanting to chop in the morning... Although lately, it seems that Rich has had more of an "issue" with that than I have!
Here is something that has yummy - but only if you like that kind of thing ( :
ReplyDeleteOld fashioned oat
cold milk
honey
and eat raw. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muesli)
my favorite is adding pecans and fresh dates (my grandparents had a date palm... I don't get fresh dates so much anymore... but dried would probably be good too)
Maybe not a huge hit for the kiddos, but maybe for the parents ( :
BTW I don't do the honey thing with the milk/oats if I add dates/pecans - it is a one of the other kind of thing in my book... but there are so many options!
ReplyDeleteYum. I love the "hot weather" ideas w/ oatmeal. I think my kids would probably go for the granola bar and I like the idea of the raw oatmeal w/ honey and milk! :)
ReplyDeleteI have a recipe from "Deceptively Delicious" (by Jessica Seinfeld) that I use... I cook it with some soy milk, canned pumpkin (or any yellow vegatable puree), and nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla, then remove from heat and stir in some peanut butter. I know, kind of a fall recipe, but whatev!

Wow, Carrie. That sounds like an interesting and yummy combination! I have that cook book and didn't even think to check for an oatmeal recipe. I'll have to pick your brain and see what other recipes your little brood of boys has liked from that book!
ReplyDeleteOff to try some of these this next week!
I love to put raspberries (fresh or frozen) with a bit of either brown sugar or honey into my oatmeal. Yum!
